In a spirit of compassion and connection, Morton volunteers recently came together at Sydney Streetlevel Mission in Surry Hills for a full day of giving back. The event was filled with warmth, energy, and a shared commitment to supporting some of Sydney’s most disadvantaged and marginalised people.
Throughout the day, volunteers rolled up their sleeves across a variety of activities that reflect the very heartbeat of Streetlevel’s mission. In the café, teams prepared and served hearty breakfasts and lunches, ensuring community members enjoyed nourishing meals in a welcoming space. At the coffee cart, steaming cups of tea, coffee, and hot chocolate were shared with a smile – small gestures that carried big meaning for those who often go without.
Meanwhile, others turned their attention to the op-shop, sorting through generous donations to make clothing and essentials more accessible. For Claire, one of the Morton volunteers, the experience was both rewarding and eye-opening:
“It was a great experience for me as it was my first time volunteering at the Salvation Army. Ayush and I worked in the shop – we barely had a rest apart from a short lunch break. We nearly managed to sort through all the clothes stacked in one room!”
The sense of teamwork extended well beyond the shop floor. Volunteers like Hintha dedicated their time in the kitchen, helping prepare meals that not only filled stomachs but also fostered dignity and belonging. Others pitched in with general maintenance, ensuring the centre remained safe, clean, and welcoming for everyone who walked through its doors.
For many, the day was both humbling and uplifting. Claire reflected on the camaraderie that defined the experience:
“I heard from another volunteer who worked in the kitchen that she was busy all day too.”
Located on Derby Lane at the rear of 339 Crown Street, Sydney Streetlevel Mission is far more than a community centre. It is a lifeline for people experiencing poverty, homelessness, and social isolation. Through its wide range of programs – from meals and clothing support to social connection and pastoral care – the centre provides a haven where individuals can find hope, dignity, and belonging.
The volunteer day highlighted the power of service to bridge divides and build solidarity. By dedicating their time and energy, Morton volunteers helped create a space of welcome and care—one meal, one sorted donation, and one kind word at a time.
