March | Serving Community Together: Morton’s Green Square Team Volunteers with Sydney City Salvos

Connecting with our local community is an important part of who we are, and recently members of the Morton Green Square office had the opportunity to do just that by volunteering with Sydney City Salvos in Waterloo. The volunteering session took place at the Salvation Army centre located on the corner of Cope and Phillip Street, Waterloo, a welcoming and cosy hub that supports people from all walks of life.

Our team joined the regular Tuesday volunteer group to assist with one of Waterloo Salvos’ most-loved initiatives: preparing and serving a free BBQ brunch for the local community. The cafe and outdoor area at Waterloo provide a warm, relaxed environment where people can gather, enjoy a meal, and connect with others. Volunteer support plays a vital role in making these weekly gatherings possible.

Representing the Morton Green Square office were Polly, Patricia, Ray, and Jenny, who rolled up their sleeves and got straight to work. Tasks throughout the day included food preparation, serving meals, setting up and packing down the BBQ area, and spending time chatting with community members. While the practical help was valuable, it was the human connection and shared conversations that made the experience especially meaningful.

The atmosphere at Waterloo Salvos was friendly, inclusive, and full of gratitude. Volunteers worked alongside Salvation Army staff and other community helpers, creating a strong sense of teamwork and shared purpose. For many visitors, the BBQ brunch is more than just a meal, it’s a chance to feel welcome, to reconnect, and to enjoy a sense of belonging in a safe and supportive space.

Our team members found the experience both humbling and rewarding. Taking time out of a busy work schedule to support a local initiative helped reinforce the importance of giving back and staying connected to the communities in which we live and work. It was also a wonderful opportunity for team bonding, allowing colleagues to work together in a completely different setting while contributing to a positive cause.

We are proud of Polly, Patricia, Ray, and Jenny for representing Morton and for their commitment to making a difference, no matter how small it may seem. Volunteering days like this remind us that community impact starts with simple acts of kindness like sharing a meal, lending a hand, or taking the time to listen.

We look forward to continuing our involvement in community initiatives like this and encourage others to get involved where they can. Together, small efforts can have a big impact.
